Established in 1919, Loblaw Groceteria was the first to introduce “self-shopping” or self-service grocery shopping.  It had a sign that said “NO WAITING” which means customers do not need to wait for a clerk to accommodate and to fetch their groceries behind the counter.

Despite the critic’s negative beliefs that it will never work, Loblaw succeeded and had 70 stores in Ontario by 1928.

Today, situated on the site is the Elmar Furniture which sells living room, bedroom, dining room, office furniture, and bathroom furniture.
